The Allen Center provides 85,000 assignable square feet for education and research. It nearly triples the space available to CSE in its previous home, Sieg Hall. Every aspect of the design recognizes that we are, first and foremost, in "the people business," and reinforces a key element of our success: collaboration. The building includes laboratories for group-based experimental work, student "breakout" areas and conference rooms for impromptu and scheduled meetings and project work, and offices for attracting and housing visiting faculty and postdocs, affiliates from local industry, and adjuncts from other UW programs.

The Allen Center was made possible through the commitment of $42 million in private funds from more than 250 friends and alumni, augmenting $30 million in State and University support. LMN Architects (designers of Benaroya Hall and McCaw Hall) headed the design team. M.A. Mortenson Company was the general contractor. Prof. Hank Levy, chair of the Building Committee, was CSE's liaison to the architect and contractor. Prof. Ed Lazowska co-chaired the Development Committee with Tom Alberg (Madrona Venture Group) and Jeremy Jaech (CSE alumnus and co-founder of Aldus and Visio). Construction began in October 2001; "topping out" took place in October 2002; October 2003 marks the formal dedication.
